SBTi approves Nemera’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target

16/05/2023

Last year in January, we announced our commitment to set near- and long-term company-wide emission reductions in line with science-based net-zero with the SBTi.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies and financial institutions across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.

During the last few months, we defined our carbon reduction targets and submitted the necessary information to the SBTi. The organization came back to us with results and recommendations for our GHG emissions reduction targets.

We’re pleased to share that: Nemera commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Nemera also commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services 55% per EUR value added within the same timeframe. Nemera has made great improvements to its energy-sourcing strategy. All our sites now, work on renewable or carbon-free electricity. This has helped us to significantly reduce our carbon emissions from Scope 2 compared to the base year of 2019. Now, we need to continue to work on the different aspects that contribute to the direct emissions of scope 1+2 and implement new actions that help us reach our goal.

As far as scope 3 is concerned, most of our emissions are from purchased goods and services, specifically from resins. Hence, engaging our suppliers and switching to low-carbon resin alternatives is critical. But it doesn’t end here, scope 3 is very wide, and taking actions related to waste reduction, business model and circularity are of great importance. This means taking into consideration the whole life cycle of our products.

And we won’t stop there! We’ll continue to strive to improve our strategies, practices and commitment in the best way toward our customers, other stakeholders, environment, and the society. Our commitment to the UN Global Compact is another concrete example of our sustainability approach. Taking actions on climate change is one of the development goals identified by the United Nations.
